Salem, Massachusetts is one of the most popular tourist locations North of Boston. The history of the Salem Witch Trials makes it a popular attraction and visitors can take the Salem Witch Walk that goes around Salem to various locations that tell the story of the Witch Trials. Salem also has the Friendship of Salem which is a tall ship that was originally constructed in 1797 and is now docked in Salem. In 2013, President Barack Obama officially designated Salem as the birthplace of the U.S. National Guard which was first organized as a small militia in 1637.
